Biorefinery Process

BlueEarth Maui Biodiesel, LLC has sought to muddy the waters, by claiming that they are building a transesterification plant instead of  a biorefinery so that they can evade writing a required Environmental Impact Statement.

SB 1718 CD1: Authorizes special purpose revenue bonds to BlueEarth Maui Biodiesel, LLC, for construction of a biodiesel refinery on Maui.

HRS 343-5(a) Except as otherwise provided, an environmental assessment shall be required for actions that  (9)  Propose any ...  (D)  Oil refinery

BlueEarth: ''Q: Are Biodiesel Plants considered 'oil refineries?' A: No, they are correctly defined as Transesterification Facilities.''  http://blueearthhawaii.com/frequent_questions

Transesterification (¦trans·e¦ster·ə·fə′kā·shən) (organic chemistry) Conversion of an organic acid ester into another ester of that same acid.

Biodiesel is derived from vegetable oils in an inexpensiveprocess called transesterification, in which vegetable oilreacts with methanol or ethanol in the presence of acatalyst. The catalyst is used to speed up the reaction. The process yields about 96 percent biodiesel. Many vegetable oils, both those used as foods and thoseunsuited for human consumption, can produce oil forbiodiesel. The most economical choice depends on the oilyield per acre, product quality, the value of the wastes andby-products of the transesterification process, geography, and government policies.

Life of the Land is a  Hawaii-based, Hawaii-focused environmental and community action group. Founded in 1970, the mission of Life of the Land is to preserve and protect the life of the land through sustainable land use and energy policies and to promote open government through research, education, advocacy and, when necessary, litigation. We believe that people are part of the environment. We are known for research, research, research. We cover complex issues such as genetic engineering, climate change, and quality of life issues. LOL is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. We do not attend fundraisers, testify for/against political and/or administrative candidates, nor do we rank candidates. We work on issues not people.
