New Kind of Hunger: Food prices rise as more crops go into producing
biofuels By Kanako Takahara. Japan Times (May 29, 2007) Food vs. Fuel. As energy demands devour crops once meant for sustenance, the economics of agriculture are being rewritten. BusinessWeek.com, February 5, 2007. From Vision to Viable - The Future of Renewable Fuels By Ms. Patricia Woertz, Chief Executive Officer, President and Board Member of ADM We believe we’re uniquely positioned to address the world’s need for more fuel and more food and as we know that, we know that some people are predicting an eventual conflict between those needs and are advocating a hierarchial approach to that fulfillment. I believe a more holistic approach is much more fruitful. Because if you think about it, hierarchial thinking always relegates some need to the bottom of the list and where on the list of food and fuel would you put the need for security; the need for a clean environment? Where would you put the need for a robust agricultural sector? Clearly, food, heat, light, mobility, security, a healthy environment, are all fundamental human needs and we believe the best solutions will come from seeing them more holistically and recognizing they have interconnections. www.usda.gov/documents/Plenary_Session_I_Woertz.doc (April 2007) Biofuels: "Green Energy" Panacea or Just the Latest Hype? by Brian Tokar, WW4REPORT Several well-respected analysts have raised serious concerns about this rapid diversion of food crops toward the production of fuel for automobiles.
